Conjunctival Naevus Removal

Freckles, birthmarks, or moles can appear anywhere on the body, including on your eye. Conjunctival nevus is a benign, noncancerous growth and is the most common lesion that occurs on the surface of the eye. It is usually a discrete lesion on the conjunctiva (the clear film over the eye) and can range from yellow to dark brown and it can lighten or darken over time. These naevi are often located adjacent to the coloured part of your eye (known as the iris).

Removal of conjunctival naevi is often completed due to a suspicious appearance, or if the patient finds them cosmetically undesirable. The procedure is done as an outpatient. The naevi are thermocoagulated with argon laser and then wiped away.

In very rare cases if the naevus is too deep conjunctival excision may be preferable to using argon laser treatment. During your consultation, Mr Hove will discuss which option of eye freckle removal is more appropriate.

Naevi are made up of pigment cells, called melanocytes, that provide colour to your skin, hair, and eyes. When several of these cells cluster together, they form a nevus. Just as with freckles anywhere on your body, conjunctival naevi aren’t associated with any pain or discomfort. For the most part, eye naevi aren’t serious and won’t impact your vision, but it’s a good idea to be aware of potential problems and to pay attention to any naevi you have as part of your routine eye care.

If you notice something that looks like a freckle in your eye that wasn’t there before, you should get it checked by Mr Hove. Although it’s likely to be harmless, Mr Hove will examine it closely and can continue checking your eye over time to check for any changes.

"I was treated by Mr Hove last month for conjunctival naevi (pigmented spots on the whites of the eye). I had one in each eye that had bothered me for quite some time, for cosmetic reasons. I have always been hesitant to have them excised and wanted a more gentle method to remove them, with a quick recovery time. Mr Hove was able to remove them for me using argon laser, which I was extremely happy about. On the day of the procedure, Mr Hove helped to calm my nerves, talked through the procedure, and happily answered the many questions I had. His bedside manner was excellent, and I felt at ease and confident that I was in good hands. Before the procedure, I was given numbing eye drops and anaesthetic eye drops. This ensured that I did not feel a thing during the procedure. The laser was then focused on the pigmented area and the naevi were subsequently removed on the spot with a cotton bud. Quick and easy and with no blood or cutting. My eyes were moderately red after the procedure, as to be expected. I was given antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops to use for one week, which calmed the redness and to prevent infection. At my follow up appointment at 2 weeks, the redness had gone and there was no trace of the naevi (thank God)- I was absolutely thrilled with the results! I would highly recommend this treatment if you have a naevus in your eye and Mr Hove is the perfect person to take care of it for you. I’m very happy. I will surely be recommending him to friends and family after this."
