Freckles, birthmarks, or moles can appear anywhere on the body, including on your eye. Conjunctival nevus is a benign, noncancerous growth and is the most common lesion that occurs on the surface of the eye. It is usually a discrete lesion on the conjunctiva (the clear film over the eye) and can range from yellow to dark brown and it can lighten or darken over time. These naevi are often located adjacent to the coloured part of your eye (known as the iris).
Removal of conjunctival naevi is often completed due to a suspicious appearance, or if the patient finds them cosmetically undesirable. The procedure is done as an outpatient. The naevi are thermocoagulated with argon laser and then wiped away.
In very rare cases if the naevus is too deep conjunctival excision may be preferable to using argon laser treatment. During your consultation, Mr Hove will discuss which option of eye freckle removal is more appropriate.
A relatively pain-free experience
The procedure is done as an outpatient. The naevi are thermocoagulated with argon laser and then wiped away. It takes around 30 minutes, and steroid drops are used for 1-2 weeks to help settle the conjunctival injection following the treatment. Recovery is typically quick and painless. In very rare cases if the naevus is too deep conjunctival excision may be preferable to using argon laser treatment.

Naevi are made up of pigment cells, called melanocytes, that provide colour to your skin, hair, and eyes. When several of these cells cluster together, they form a nevus. Just as with freckles anywhere on your body, conjunctival naevi aren’t associated with any pain or discomfort. For the most part, eye naevi aren’t serious and won’t impact your vision, but it’s a good idea to be aware of potential problems and to pay attention to any naevi you have as part of your routine eye care.
If you notice something that looks like a freckle in your eye that wasn’t there before, you should get it checked by Mr Hove. Although it’s likely to be harmless, Mr Hove will examine it closely and can continue checking your eye over time to check for any changes.
Mr Hove has performed over 2,500 laser eye procedures. He has experience of the different treatment options and will offer you the best treatment option based on your clinical suitability and visual requirements.
