How does cataract surgery work?

Cataract surgery removes the hazy natural lens in your eye, and replaces it with a either synthetic lens, This treatment improves the clarity your vision and may reduce or eliminate your reliance on glasses and contact lenses if a premium trifocal lens is chosen.

The two things that cause your prescription to change are the shape of you cornea (front window of the eye) and the shape of your crystalline lens. Your crystalline lens will be replaced with a plastic lens (refractive lens exchange) which will never change power but you cornea will still change over time noticeably after 15-25 years.

What can I expect?

A relatively pain-free experience
Unlike contact lenses, which sit on the surface of your eye, a synthetic lens is placed inside it, so you won’t feel a thing. We recommend to our lens surgery patients that they wait three days before returning to work. However, as every patient is different, Mr Hove will make the best recommendations for you depending on your recovery time and work environment.

Short recovery time

Mr Hove firmly believes that his patients should receive exemplary levels of care before, during and after their lens replacement surgery. With that in mind, every patient has access to him 24 hours a day via his personal mobile phone to deal with an any worries or problems that may occur after the operation.

Patients leave the hospital with a clear shield over both eyes. They are able to see immediately after the procedure though the vision is still slightly blurry. Most patients can see clearly 24 hours later and will be driving within the first 3 days.

A cataract is a clouding of the natural crystalline lens in your eye. It is usually due to ageing and most people above the age of 60 have some signs of lens opacity. The passage of light through a cataract is impaired so the retina only receives blurred and distorted images. Other symptoms include excessive dazzle/glare from car headlights or bright sunshine making night/dusk driving difficult.

Modern cataract surgery is carried out through a very small incision (2.2mm). These small incisions self- seal immediately after surgery and heal over the following few weeks. No stitches are typically used, and normal daily activities can be resumed very soon after surgery. After the incision, a circular opening is made in the elastic membrane around the lens called the capsule. Then the phacoemulsification tip is inserted through this opening to remove the cataract.
